FAQ
Understanding the Cost of Curtain Shortening
Our curtain shortening service is priced based on the level of work required to achieve a precise and consistent final result.
Lined curtains require both the face fabric and lining to be adjusted and finished separately, which increases the amount of work involved compared to unlined curtains.
Our pricing for this service starts from £55, including free delivery both ways.
This ensures a professional finish with both panels correctly aligned once hung.
UK-Wide Postal Service & Local Drop-Off
We offer a convenient curtain alteration service across the UK, with free delivery both ways via our postal service.
Our postal service is handled via InPost lockers, providing a simple and flexible way to send and receive your curtains. In most cases, your nearest locker is within approximately 0.2 miles of your location.
You can drop off your parcel at any convenient locker using a QR code we provide — no printing required. Once your curtains are ready, they will be returned to your chosen locker for collection. You will have up to 72 hours to collect your parcel at a time that suits you.
If the parcel is not collected within this timeframe, it will be securely returned to us for safe handling.
For local customers, we also offer a drop-off service by appointment in Chafford Hundred, Essex, with the option for same-day turnaround on morning drop-offs.
No need to visit — the entire process can be completed locally via your nearest locker, offering a simple, reliable, and flexible experience.
Who Is This Service For?
Our curtain shortening service is designed for customers who want their curtains to hang at the correct length with a clean, professional finish.
Whether you’ve purchased ready-made curtains that are too long, moved into a new home, or need to adjust bespoke curtains, we ensure each pair is carefully altered to achieve a precise and balanced final drop.
This service is ideal for those who want a consistent, well-finished result — not just a basic trim.
Can Curtains Be Shortened by a Fixed Amount?
Many ready-made curtains are not the exact size stated on the packaging, and even curtains from the same pair can vary in length.
Removing a fixed amount often results in uneven curtains once hung.
In the past, we accepted requests to remove a fixed amount (e.g. 10cm). This frequently resulted in uneven curtains once hung, despite following the instruction correctly. To avoid unsatisfactory results and ensure a professional finish, we no longer offer this approach.
For this reason, we work to a finished drop measurement to ensure a precise and balanced result.
What Is a “Finished Drop” and Why Does It Matter?
The finished drop is the exact length you want your curtains to be once they are hanging in place.
Working to a finished drop allows us to ensure accuracy and consistency across both curtains.
Not sure how to measure? Please refer to our Measuring Guide.
What Is Involved in Professional Curtain Shortening?
Curtain shortening is a detailed process, not a simple cut.
Each curtain is carefully unpicked, pressed, and fully opened to allow accurate measurement. It is then measured and adjusted to achieve the required finished drop, ensuring both panels align perfectly.
The hem is professionally reconstructed, and all seams are re-finished to maintain a clean appearance with no visible stitching on the face fabric.
This ensures a precise, balanced result and avoids common issues such as uneven curtain lengths.
Do You Use Fusing Tape or Sewn Hems?
No — we do not use fusing (iron-on) tape.
All hems are professionally sewn to ensure durability, structure, and a clean, long-lasting finish.
Fusing tape may be suitable for temporary or DIY solutions, but it does not provide the same level of strength or quality as a properly stitched hem.
Our approach ensures your curtains maintain their shape and finish over time.
What Is the Typical Turnaround Time?
Turnaround time depends on the type of service and delivery method.
For postal orders (such as shortening or heading changes), the turnaround is typically around 1 week. Curtains are usually processed the next working day after arrival and, where possible, dispatched the same day once completed.
Please note, we use a third-party courier service, so delivery times are outside of our control.
For local drop-off (by appointment in Chafford Hundred), a faster service is available. Curtains dropped off between 9:00–10:00am can often be ready for same-day collection.

Please note: a tolerance of ±1cm applies, as curtains are measured flat on the work surface and fabric may drop slightly once hung on the pole or track.
The price list below is for curtain shortening based on curtain widths measured flat along the bottom hem. Prices are applicable for curtains with a drop of up to 300cm.
All prices include free delivery both ways across Mainland UK.

Curtain Relining & Thermal Upgrade
Give your curtains a new lease on life with our curtain relining and thermal upgrade service. Whether your linings are sun-damaged, worn out, or simply not insulating well enough, we can replace them with fresh thermal or blackout lining — without altering the appearance of your existing fabric.
Relining is a highly skilled process that involves undoing the original stitching, removing the existing lining, and reconstructing the curtain from the inside out. In many cases, it requires just as much time and craftsmanship as making a new curtain from scratch.
Because of this complexity, we do not offer a standard price list. Instead, we provide bespoke quotes based on the curtain type, size, heading style, and condition.
We work with all curtain types — including:
Interlined and blackout curtains
Triple pinch pleat, pencil pleat, wave and eyelet headings
Ready-made or bespoke curtains
To get a quote, please send us a few photos of your curtains along with their measurements. We’re happy to advise on the best relining options to suit your needs and budget.
All alteration services are subject to our Terms & Conditions.
Soft Furnishing Repair Service
We do not provide a fixed price list for repairs, as each job varies in complexity and size. Quotes are given individually once we understand the issue and review your photos.
Please send details of your project and some clear images to info@design-jr.com, and we’ll be happy to advise.
The images here showcase one of our previous repair projects.
This client’s window treatments were damaged by UV exposure, causing the fabric to fray. We revived the set by adding a contrast border to cover the affected areas — giving it a fresh new life without replacing the entire piece.
All alteration services are subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Please note:
Curtains will be returned folded and will not be ironed.
For details on other work please send an email info@design-jr.com and quote can be given.
